How to Exfoliate the Face With Milk

Milk is not only great for cereal but can also be part of your skincare regimen.

You can make a variety of facial products at home using ingredients found in your cupboard and refrigerator. Milk, especially, makes a great exfoliant due to its high lactic acid content. You can blend it with many other ingredients to make either a scrub or mask with a gentle exfoliating action. If you have sensitive skin, rub a small amount of milk on a concealed area of your body to test for a skin reaction before applying it all over your face.

How to Use a Toothbrush to Exfoliate Skin

Exfoliate skin with a toothbrush in the shower.

Flag this photo

If dead cells are giving your skin a dull and uneven appearance, use a toothbrush to exfoliate skin all over your body. Exfoliation is the process by which dead skin cells are sloughed off, and new skin cells move to the surface. These new cells carry essential oils and lipids that make your skin more radiant and smooth. Use a toothbrush, in combination with a natural exfoliating mixture, to exfoliate your entire body once or twice a week to achieve more healthy, glowing skin.

Mix brown sugar and oil in a cup until all ingredients are fully incorporated. Get into the shower and cleanse your body with a body wash. Rinse your body thoroughly with running water.

2

Dip the newer toothbrush into your exfoliating mixture and gently scrub your entire body with your toothbrush. Start at your heels and work your way up to the neck. Use a circular scrubbing motion to slough off skin cells properly.

3

Switch to your old, used toothbrush to exfoliate your face, as bristles will be softer and more gentle. Dip the toothbrush into exfoliating mixture and gently rub its bristles against your entire face in a circular motion. Start on your forehead and work your way down to your neck.

4

Rise off the exfoliating mixture from your body with running, lukewarm water.

Tips & Warnings

Moisturize your skin immediately after exfoliating, while skin is still damp, to lock in moisture and protect new skin cells.

If you have sensitive skin, do not use a toothbrush to exfoliate your face, or you can cause irritation and flaking. Use a warm washcloth instead to exfoliate sensitive facial skin.

A Gentle Way to Exfoliate Dead Skin on the Legs

Silky smooth legs give you confidence.

Flag this photo

Exfoliating your legs is a natural, healthy way to promote skin regeneration and give you smooth, clear skin. Some methods of exfoliating can be harsh on your skin, causing rough, dry patches that can be painful and irritating. While adding certain chemicals such as alpha hydroxy acids can speed up the exfoliation process, you can achieve very similar results with a chemical-free process that you can do in the comfort of your home.

Brush your legs gently with a loofah, scrub gloves or body brush before you get in the shower. This will help loosen dry skin and make the most of your exfoliating procedure. Begin at your ankles and slowly move up your legs.

2

Apply the exfoliating cleanser to your loofah, scrub gloves or body brush once your legs are wet. Scrub your legs beginning at your ankles and work your way up each leg. Scrub in a circular motion, being careful not to scrub too much in one place.

3

Rinse your legs with lukewarm water to soothe. Water that is too hot can scald your newly exposed skin, leaving it irritated.

4

Pat your legs dry with a clean towel once you are out of the shower.

5

Apply a gentle body lotion liberally to your legs once they are dry. Moisturize your legs daily to keep them smooth and healthy.

Tips & Warnings

You can exfoliate your legs two times per week to maintain optimum results.

How to Exfoliate the Face With Honey

Honey has been used since ancient times to enhance skin beauty and health.

Flag this photo

Healing honey facial masks have been used for centuries to promote healthy skin. Legend has it that Cleopatra herself took baths in milk and honey to keep her skin soft and supple. Honey exfoliating masks are used to remove dead cells and reveal the glowing new skin beneath. Used topically, honey alone is a mild to moderate exfoliating agent. Honey combined with other natural substances can create a natural and powerful exfoliating treatment for a wide variety of skin types and conditions.

Create an exfoliating mask for acne using yogurt and raw honey. Natural, unflavored yogurt contains weak acids, called lactic acids, that help skin shed dead cells and unclog pores. Mix four to five tablespoons of honey in one cup of lukewarm water. Add 1/2 cup of yogurt to the honey and mix thoroughly. Spread evenly over face and let sit for one hour. Cleanse thoroughly. If your face feels tight or dry, use a light moisturizer.

2

Mix raw honey with Aloe vera for a calming facial mask suitable for sensitive skin. Modern scientific researchers have rediscovered honey's power as an anti-inflammatory agent and an aid to wound healing. Honey alone can calm red or inflamed skin. Aloe vera is also known for its skin soothing properties. Together they can mildly exfoliate skin without causing irritation. Mix equal parts pure Aloe vera juice and honey. Apply the mixture to your face and let sit for one hour. Cleanse thoroughly.

3

Use cinnamon and honey to create an rejuvenating, and sweet smelling, facial mask. Cinnamon powder and cinnamon oil contain a substance called cinnamaldehyde that has anti-microbial and anti-bacterial properties. Bacteria can cause skin to look dull and can inhibit normal skin shedding. Deep anti-bacterial treatments can invigorate the look and feel of skin. Mix one to two teaspoons of cinnamon powder with one cup of honey. Add a small amount of warm water beforehand to liquefy the honey slightly. Spread over your face and let sit for 10 to 15 minutes. Wash thoroughly.

4

Soften and exfoliate dry skin with an aspirin and honey facial mask. Aspirin is also known as acetylsalicylic acid. This acid is used an ingredient in many commercial skin preparations as a softening agent. Dissolve one to two small, uncoated aspirin tablets in two tablespoons warm water. Mix one cup of honey with the aspirin. Spread the mixture on your skin and leave for one hour. Wash thoroughly to expose silky and glowing skin.
