How to Remove Wrinkles From Dress Pants

Wrinkled dress pants looky messy and unprofessional.

Wrinkles in your clothing make you look sloppy and disheveled. These unsightly creases are common in dress pants because these pants are often made out of soft, natural fibers like cotton, wool or linen. Natural fibers are more prone to wrinkles and creases than synthetic fibers like polyester. Dress pants also wrinkle often due to sitting in them during long office hours or meetings. Fortunately, there are ways to remove wrinkles from dress pants and help them look crisp and clean.

Iron the dress pants to smooth out any wrinkles. Set your iron to the correct temperature for the fabric content of the dress pants. Turn the pants inside-out and lay them flat while you iron both the front and back of the pants.

2

Blow dry the dress pants. Set your blow dryer on the hottest possible setting and wave the dryer a few inches away from the pants. This works best on wet or damp pants.

3

Spray the dress pants with a wrinkle relaxer. Mix equal parts water with white vinegar in a spray bottle. Spray the dress pants with the solution and press the wrinkles out with a sponge or wash cloth.

4

Hang the dress pants. Lightly spray the dress pants with clean water. Hang the pants on a hanger for a few hours until they dry. The weight of the wet cloth should smooth out the wrinkles.

5

Spray the dress pants with diluted fabric softener. Mix 1 teaspoon of fabric softener in a spray bottle with distilled water. Spray the dress pants and hang them up to dry.

6

Steam the dress pants. Turn the shower on the hottest setting. Hang the dress pants on a hanger on the back of the bathroom door or on a towel rack. Close the door and allow the dress pants to steam for at least 20 minutes.

7

Soak the dress pants in water and put them in the clothes dryer. Set the dryer to the hottest setting and allow the dryer to run thorough the entire cycle. Remove the dress pants promptly to prevent them from getting wrinkled again.

Tips & Warnings

Test all wrinkle relaxers on an inconspicuous area first before spraying them directly on the dress pants.

Check all care labels and follow the specific washing and ironing instructions for each garment.

How to Fix Wrinkled Pants

There are faster ways to fix wrinkles in pants than ironing.

If you have enough time, you can easily iron or steam the wrinkles from your pants. Even if you are careful to remove your pants from the dryer before they have time to wrinkle and you hang them carefully in your closet, they can become wrinkled. Next time you’re running short on time, you can remove these wrinkles in less than five minutes.

Place the wrinkled pants inside the dryer. Read the care instructions on the pants label to determine what dryer temperature is best to use.

2

Wet a clean sock and throw it into the dryer with your wrinkled pants.

3

Place a sheet of fabric softener into the dryer with your wet sock and wrinkled pants.

4

Turn the dryer to the correct setting and allow your pants, wet sock and fabric softener sheet to dry for approximately five minutes.

5

Remove pants from the dryer. The wrinkles will be gone and your pants are ready to wear.

How to Fix Wrinkled Corduroy Pants

Gentle ironing can help remove wrinkles from your corduroy pants.

Related to moleskin and velveteen, corduroy is a weft pile fabric whose manufacture is considered an art form. The attention to detail that goes into creating a corduroy garment translates into specific demands for the fabric's care. Everyday wear and tear can wrinkle corduroy, yet its delicate nature rules out simply tossing the garment into the dryer. Common household equipment, used with caution, can help take out wrinkles in corduroy pants.

Iron the corduroy pants very gently. Avoid letting the weight of the iron sit on the fabric, because this may only set the wrinkles more deeply. Instead, use a "low impact" pressing technique. Flip the garment inside out to start. Iron it using only the tip of the iron, lifting it off the fabric and delicately pressing it back down, until the wrinkle is released.

2

Steam press the garment. This mild technique can force out wrinkles without damaging the corduroy's texture. Follow this by brushing the corduroy with a fabric brush.

3

Hang the clothing for a couple of days. When corduroy pants are left in a closet, the wrinkles should eventually fall away.

4

Wash the corduroy pants. If you would like to hand-wash the garment, flip it inside out first, then ensure that the detergent has completely dissolved in the water before beginning to wash. For machine washes, turn the garment inside out as well. Load fewer clothes than usual into the washer, and set the cycle for the lowest rotation speed and lowest temperature possible. After either washing method, hang the pants to dry.

Tips & Warnings

Never tumble dry corduroy clothing; it can damage the clothes, make them shrink or set new wrinkles into the fabric. Also avoid concentrated detergents or bleaching agents, which can damage corduroy's unique fabric.
